Assessment of Acquired Color Vision Impairment among the Workers Exposed to Mixed Organic Solvents in an Automobile Manufacturing Company
author
Abstract:
Background and Objectives: Solvents are widely used in industries. Occupational exposure to organic solvents can lead to dysfunction of the nervous system. Since color-vision impairment can be a sensitive and early marker of neurotoxic damage, this study was designed to determine the influence of chronic occupational exposure to organic solvent mixtures on color vision. Materials and Methods: This discriptive study was conducted in an automobile plant in 2008. Workers employed in the painting saloon were considered as exposed and workers in the assembly were used as non-exposed. A questionnaire containing required data of workers was administered. After considering exclusion criteria, color vision of 157 exposed workers was compared with 174 non-exposed worker, using X2 test. Results: The percentage of acquired dyschromatopsia was 43% in the exposed group and 3.45% in the other group. The percentage of acquired dyschromatopsia exposed employees was significantly higher than that of the non-exposed subjects (OR = 21.95, CI = 9.16- 52.57) (p<0.001). Mean of the color-confusion index for exposed employees was significantly higher than that among the other subjects (1.32 and 1.02 respectively) (p<0.001). The logistic regression for color confusion index indicated that the color-confusion index was positively related to exposure to mixed organic solvents (p<0.001). Conclusions: The results of this study suggested that chronic occupational exposure with mixture of organic solvents, in higher amounts of permissible levels, can cause acquired color vision defects. Key words: Organic Solvent, Color Vision, Occupational Exposure Funding: This study was supported by Iran Univrsity of Medical Sciences. Conflict of interest: None declared. Ethical approval: The Ethics Committee of Iran Univrsity of Medical Sciences, approved the study.

full textAssessment of neurobehavioral disorders in workers exposed to organic solvents in a publication house
Background: Organic solvents are known as a group of organic compounds, widely used in industry and to which many workers are exposed. Neurotoxicity is one of the most important complications of the chronic exposure to the solvents and may causes neurobehavioral disorders in workers. We have studied the frequency of neurobehavioral disorders in workers exposed to organic solvents in one o...
full textImportance of Colour Vision Assessment in Workers Exposed to Organic Solvents
The use of organic solvents in developing countries has been wide spread in the last century [1]. Organic solvents are used in different industrial processes and are sometimes considering important supplies in order to obtain more benefit in any type of manufacturer business, due to they can be reused [2]. Organic solvents are commonly used in the dry cleaning industry, because relatively stabl...

Background: Chemicals are among risk factors that can affect women's reproductive system. This study is aimed to investigate the association of occupational exposure to a mixture of organic solvents with menstruation disturbances and hormonal changes among female workers. Methods : Female workers of a pharmaceutical company were divided into three groups of non-exposed, low-exposed and high...

The effects of exposure to styrene were studied among 60 men aged 20 to 56 (mean 29.5) employed in shipbuilding. Exposure was due to the handling of glass reinforced polyester materials. The study was cross sectional and the workers were compared with a control group matched for age, social and occupational state, and ethnic origin. During the study, the mean atmospheric exposure to styrene was...
full textEffects of mixed organic solvents on neuromotor functions among workers in Buddhist altar manufacturing factories.
To clarify the neuromotor effects of long-term exposure to mixed organic solvents, postural sway and tremor were measured in 62 solvent workers of four Buddhist altar manufacturing factories who had worked for 1-46 (mean 12) yr. By using the passive gas sampler, 8-h time-weighted average concentrations in the workers were estimated to be 0.02-8.7 ppm for toluene, 0.02-7.7 ppm for xylene, 0.02-5...
